A Christmas Week Pause: Finding Joy by Noticing Who You’ve Been Carrying

December 22, 20252 min read

Christmas week has a different rhythm, doesn’t it?

The noise quiets just a little.
The calendar loosens its grip.
And somehow—between the wrapping paper and the leftovers—you can feel it:

That gentle nudge asking,
How am I really doing?

Not in a dramatic way.
Just honest. Just real.

And if joy has felt a little distant this year, I want to offer something softly:

What if joy hasn’t disappeared…
What if it’s just been buried under the identities you’ve been carrying?

The Roles We Wear Like Sweaters We Forgot to Take Off

Most of us don’t realize how many roles we’re living inside.

Not just at work—but everywhere.

The strong one.
The responsible one.
The one who holds it together.
The one who makes Christmas happen.
The one who doesn’t ask for much.

At some point, those roles stopped being something you did
and quietly became something you are.

And during a season like this—when expectations, memories, and emotions all show up at once—that weight becomes more noticeable.

If Joy Feels Muted, It’s Not a Failure

I hear people say this time of year,
“I should feel happier than I do.”

But joy doesn’t respond well to pressure.

If you’ve been feeling a little flat, or tired, or disconnected—especially around people you love—that doesn’t mean something is wrong with you.

It might simply mean you’ve been carrying more than anyone realizes.
Including yourself.

This Week Isn’t Asking You to Change Anything

Christmas week isn’t about resolutions.
It’s about awareness.

A gentle noticing.

Who am I being right now?
What role am I stepping into automatically?
What part of me hasn’t had space this year?

No fixing.
No judging.
Just noticing.

Because the moment you can see the identity you’re living inside…
you create a little room to breathe.

And joy loves room.

Joy Isn’t Loud—It’s Honest

Real joy doesn’t show up as constant happiness.

Sometimes it shows up as relief.
Sometimes as quiet contentment.
Sometimes as simply not pretending anymore.

Joy returns when you let yourself be human instead of heroic.

This week, joy might look like:

  • Saying no without explaining

  • Letting someone else carry the load

  • Being present instead of perfect

  • Giving yourself permission to feel exactly how you feel

That counts. All of it.

A Christmas Week Intention (No Pressure Allowed)

If you want an intention to hold gently this week, let it be this:

I am allowed to experience this season as I am, not as who I think I should be.

No role required.
No performance needed.

Just you—showing up honestly.

And sometimes… that’s where joy quietly finds its way back. ✨
